    Beta v3.0.0.0

Hi all, Just a quick update on the next beta. We are still trying to nail down an issue with Drive Idle... we believe we have sorted the performance problem, however, there is still an issue with files not displaying on occasions. Problem difficult to sort, as it can take days before it shows up. Anyways... stay tuned!

Ok I have to admit that ever since the WHSv1 and then WHS2011 days I have looked at Drive Bender (and tested for a short while back in the day) but opted for DrivePool at the time. Now all these years later I have finally seen the light. Drivepool has destroyed my carefully created and non fragmented archive drives for the very last time. Then having messed with Storage Spaces for a few days I abandoned that quickly. So it was time to revisit Drive Bender and I'm extremely happy. "Cascade Mode" is all I have ever been looking for. Thanks Anthony.

You have right. Scan for Drives und delete the other Moundpoint solve the problem. Server now finish and works great with drive bender. Thanks for the help.

1- You should release the license for DriveBender on your old server 2- Remove disks and install on new server 3- Install DB software 4- when you reboot after installing DB it should recognize the pool and all should be well 5- reregister your DB license on the new server

Welcome edo. To be honest, I'm not sure what the answer is, as I only have single accounts on the servers where I run DriveBender. Have you checked the permissions within DriveBender? It may be possible to create a separate folder mountpoint and grant access to this mountpoint only to your HTPC user. Have you read through the FAQs for DriveBender - https://support.division-m.com/hc/en-us/categories/201693583-Knowledge-Base-Drive-Bender If none of that is possible, and in lieu of any other answers, you could raise a Support Ticket (https://support.division-m.com) and get the devs involved. Let us know how you get on.

So all of your old drives are in the restored pool on your new server? You may have to remove the drive letter from the pool disks as for some reason, they get assigned a drive by Windows and DB doesn't remove it on a restore. Once all your drives are found by DB and the pool is restored, you can add new drives to the pool. If that still isn't working as you think it should, then please raise a Support Ticket.

    Primary Utilization?

For some reason this periodically resets to a very bogus number. This time I have 14.34TB used of my 4TB pool! I've reopened a ticket.

    Primary Utilization?

Problem solved. Anthony (DB) directed me to run HealthCheck on the pool and it fixed the pool utilization display discrepancy.

    Cannot delete pool file.

I have seen a couple of times that when you delete a file, it doesn't delete and then when you try again, you get the permissions message. Rebooting does seem to release some kind of lock on the file and it is then deleted. I would suggest raising a Support Ticket for the devs to investigate.

I would suggest that you also open a support ticket, sometimes the devs miss requests in the forum. https://support.division-m.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

I would have thought that a reboot would have brought the drive back into the pool as long as it's still functional. In the case where you merged it as an existing DB pool drive I'm not sure what to do to clean up the dups. It would be good to open a support request. https://support.division-m.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

    Pool options for balancing

Not currently no. Perhaps raise a Support Ticket and see if there's any way of getting it added, as I have 2 pools as well and could possibly utilise separate settings.
  23. 1 point
I gather from your post that you have a trouble ticket open?? To me I can't see how a clean install of Win7 and DB will help. The pool drives would be in the same state as soon as DB initialized which would leave your pool in the same state it's currently in. If you don't have a ticket open you should open one as this sounds like it's something that Anthony will need to take a closer look at. https://support.division-m.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

    Beta v3.0.9.0

Release v3.0.9.0 beta (2018-11-09) [ b ] Further improvements on Drive Idle performance. [ b ] A number of bug fixes on the Drive Idle feature. [ n ] Drive Idle now defaults to disabled. [ n ] Added notification options to the Pool Firewall. [ b ] A number of minor network share related issues. Download here Pool firewall configuration - We have posted a "How to" on the Pool Firewall, you can access via support at https://support.division-m.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000366936 Important - We have now set the Drive Idle feature disabled by default (you can re-enable under setting -> performance). Due to the amount of time it is taking to resolve performance issues seen by some users, we are planning to release Drive Bender with this feature disabled. Once we have these issues resolved, we will release an update.

    Beta v3.0.0.0

Thanks CBers... The installer will only force an uninstall if the core driver is out of date. v3 is using the same driver as v2.8.x, so I would expect a forced uninstall first. So that leaves an issue with the installer and the service starting, we'll check it out. In the meantime, I note the issue in the original post.

    Patch v2.8.2.2

We have a number of users reporting balancing issues, including landing zone clearing... this patch will a] Fix these issues - or - b] Allow better diagnostics via improved logging. This patch requires v2.8 To install, do the following Make sure there is nothing accessing the pool. Open the Windows Task Manager and find the process "DriveBenderService.exe", kill this process, along with "DriveBenderSmartService.exe and DriveBenderTray.exe (this will take down the pool). Download and unzip the DriveBenderWindows_2822.zip patch file, and copy ALL files to the Drive Bender folder (typically this is "C:\Program Files\Division-M\Drive Bender"), overwriting the existing files. Restart the machine. Important note - Users running WHS, or any Windows Server Dashboard, will need to update the addin's... to install, do the following Make sure the dashboard is not running Open the Windows Task Manager and find the process "DriveBenderHealthService.exe", kill this process. Download and unzip the DriveBenderWHS_2822.zip patch file, and copy ALL files to the WindowsServer bin folder (typically this is "C:\Program Files\Windows Server\Bin"), overwriting the existing files. If you continue to have issues, please enable debug logging (under settings -> performance) and forward the log files onto support (do not post log files here)

Why do drives spool up every hour?

Without knowing what else runs on your PC, it's hard to hazard a guess. Check your Task Scheduler and see if anything runs hourly. What setting do you have for a screensaver? Is it set to start after an hour of inactivity? Loads of things could cause disk access. My disks are on 24x7.

Why do drives spool up every hour?

Drive balancing isn't the only thing that will wake up the drives. Here's something in the DB FAQ's you might be interested in https://support.division-m.com/hc/en-us/articles/333757024875-How-do-I-disable-all-internal-scheduled-tasks- Be sure you understand the implications.

    Add multuple drives at once

When adding new drives to a system it would be nice to be able to add / queue all of the adds at once instead of needing to wait for each drive add to complete. It takes significant time to add a 6 or 8 TB drive to a pool. Would be nice to be able to add and then walk away instead of checking after each add for complete.

will it be possible to use Drive Xtender with the existing DriveBender pool? Or is the pool structure different? Trying to figure out how much work and how risky such transition would be.

    Drive Bender v2.8.0.0 released

Thank you for another maintenance update!
  42. 1 point
I didn't know, and the manual doesn't cover this (and is way old!) so I rand a File Validation Pass. Note that the confirmation dialog is related to File Balancing. It looks to be verifying that 1) primary files are on one and only one physical disk, and 2) that the correct level of duplication is being maintained for all files in the pool(s). My validation is still running (40TB) so it will be a while until I can run a File System Health check. Ha, found this after some googling... https://support.division-m.com/hc/en-us/articles/214027103-What-is-the-health-monitor-and-how-does-it-work- Hmm.. I could be wrong about File Validation.

    landing zone question

The files are moved off whenever you say so in Balancing tab. Looks like the LZ is cleared if < x% is available and the scheduled check time has occurred (30 min, 1hr, ... midnight). I'm not sure how duplication affects this, but I think it will occur when the file is first written. If the rest of the pool is full, I can't imaging DB just deleting the files off the LZ.

    Dropbox v2 API patch (v2.2.3.0)

Dropbox has updated their API and is depreciating the v1 API as some point. We have updated our service to support the v2 API but do not have a formal release ready, as we are still working on a final bug. If you do have issues with Dropbox, please patch with the following update. 1) Download the v2.2.3.0 patch (attached to this post). 2) Stop the Cloud Xtender service (under services, select CloudXtender, right click, and select stop). 3) Unzip the patch file to "C:\Program Files\Division-M\Cloud Xtender", overwriting the existing files. 4) Start the Cloud Xtender service. Note - You will need to re-authenticate your Dropbox connection when you re-start Cloud Xtender (see image). CloudXtender_patch_v2230.zip

    Just getting started

Description on the create new pool is strictly up to you. Leave pool typed managed as this will keep your life easier. What managed does it allows Drive Bender to know where all your files are and then it tells the OS versus you managing everything and be a nightmare.
