    Release v3.0.9.0 beta (2018-11-09)
[ b ] Further improvements on Drive Idle performance.
[ b ] A number of bug fixes on the Drive Idle feature.
[ n ] Drive Idle now defaults to disabled.
[ n ] Added notification options to the Pool Firewall.
[ b ] A number of minor network share related issues.
    Download here
Pool firewall configuration - We have posted a "How to" on the Pool Firewall, you can access via support at https://support.division-m.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000366936
Important - We have now set the Drive Idle feature disabled by default (you can re-enable under setting -> performance). Due to the amount of time it is taking to resolve performance issues seen by some users, we are planning to release Drive Bender with this feature disabled. Once we have these issues resolved, we will release an update.

Our main release is being held up by some performance issues with the new Drive Idle feature... seems, for some users, this is causing slow folder enumeration. So we can get the v3.1 release out, we are going to disable this feature by default (users can enable is they like)... then, once we have it performance sorted for all users, we'll do a point release that enables this feature by default.
FYI - We are planning one more beta, v3.0.9.0

From the Blog: The next feature is one we have called “Drive Idle”… over the years, a common concern with drive pooling is 1) power consumption and 2) drive wear and tear. Every time a pool is accessed, it can require many, if not all drives in the pool to spin up. In fact, this access is often a third-party app indexing the pool as a background task, again, often requiring the entire pool to spin up. Our Drive Idle technology is designed to prevent these spin ups, or, at the very least limit them. This feature should also improve pool performance and responsiveness.
From my understanding, Drive Idle caches the location of the files and only spins up the necessary HDD for access, so other HDDs in the pool can remain spinned down. From my experiences, this feature still needs some tweaking concidering speed, but we are still in Beta, so no need for worries.

Some good news, we have solved the Drive Idle issue... just performing some final tests and should have a new beta out in the next week.

    Hi all,
Just a quick update on the next beta. We are still trying to nail down an issue with Drive Idle... we believe we have sorted the performance problem, however, there is still an issue with files not displaying on occasions. Problem difficult to sort, as it can take days before it shows up. Anyways... stay tuned!

As CBers already suggested, uninstalling and reinstalling resolves the issue. Maybe installing over an existing installation does not work in all cases.

For people with issues, I would suggest opening Support Tickets, as this is the only way the developers can fix any potential issues.

Just installed v3 over the top of v2.7, but on PC restart, the DB service won't start.

Will uninstall and reinstall and see what happens.

TobiMan got a reaction from nichlaz in Landing Zone used when swapping/removing HD from pool?
    Hi all,

I just replaced a drive in my DB-Pool and I realised that the landing zone is used during the moving files process. I don't know, but I think it would be more productive in this situation, when DB writes the files to the new HD directly.

Writing to the landing zone, verifying, moving from the landing zone, verifying, sounds done twice at least for these occasions. I think it would be nice to exclude the landing zone during this process or have the option to.

    What do you think?

TobiMan reacted to CBers in Monitoring App
    Hi Anthony.

Are there any plans to create an app (Android, iOS, WP) that would allow us to check our pools?

Would like the ability to monitor disk removals etc. from an app, rather than having to keep running DB Manager.

    Thanks.

TobiMan got a reaction from scielsPhili in Combine copying and verifying?
    Hi,

I've just replaced a HD within my pool and realised the following during the swapping procedure:

    1. DB reads the file to be moved to the new HD
    2. DB writes the file to the new HD
    3. DB reads the file again for verifying from the old HD and builds a CRC sum
    4. DB checks against the file on the new HD

Couldn't step 3 combined with step 1, so the file to be moved would be read once instead of twice?

    Thanks
    Tobias

    Hi w3wilkes,

sure, both partitions are in the pool. I choosed that way because I still hope for DB to support VSS, which is limited to 2TB .

Ahm... if I understand you correctly, DB does not recognise that 2 partitions are on the same physical drive? You are 100 % sure about that?

I just ran into something similar. I've partioned a 4TB HD into two 2TB partions (I run WHS 2011) and for some reason the second partion took too much time to become online, so DB complained about 1 HD not being available and put the pool in read-only-mode (could not be the HD itself, because the first partition was available). One second later everything was nice again. So I think some kind of threshold could do no harm .

The drives are fairly new. You can never know of course, but according to the built in Hard Drive Sentinel everything is fine.

So I'll open a ticket and update this thread, if there is anything new.

    Thanks for your help

    Hi,

I've got around 80 files, which show up in the system log as "Orphaned duplicate file found [....]".

According to the manual I should start the pool repair option. I did this several times, but the orphaned
files are still there. Is this expected behaviour or am I understanding something wrong?

    I would appreciate any advice.

    Thanks
